When Lenovo smartphones in 2014 ended the market of Moto X series, there were doubts about withstanding of Motorola. Motorola had a great history in the smartphone world. And with the classic flick of Moto Razr, Motorola challenged Nokia during their peak time. Since then in the world of Android smartphones, the company had a great history. Now Motorola is back with the striking modular Z series, Moto Z2 play is a competitor.
Moto Z2 Play is the successor of Moto Z Play. As a successor, Moto Z2 play features few key improvements with even more Moto Mod accessories. However, Motorola this time had made some compromises. Such as, Moto Z2 Play has a much smaller battery and high price as compared to Moto Z Play. Let us just review Moto Z2 Play and find: Is Moto Z2 Play is a competitor to other Android phones or not?
Moto Z2 Play didn’t redefine the design completely. But compared with its predecessor, Moto Z2 Play is 1 mm thinner and gives a better in-hand feel. The back side of the body features a metal backplate. This has improved the fingerprint-prone glass back of Moto Z Play giving us Moto Z2 Play.
“As per the Moto Z Series lineup, Moto Z2 play has only two noticeable design changes.”
- Moto Mod: Motorola has released a handful of new Moto Mods which perfectly fit and work with this new design. They are compatible with Moto Z2 Play, Moto Z Play, Moto Z and Moto Z Force also. On the subject of this Motorola has guaranteed Moto Mod compatibility for up to three years.
Along with the display resolution of 1920 x 1080, the Moto Z2 Play comes with a 5.5-inch AMOLED display. Resulting in a pixel density of 401 PPI. Consequently, Moto Z2 Play will let you enjoy vibrant colors and great viewing angles. However, as the display doesn’t get very bright, it makes difficult to read under direct sunlight even though the brightness is set to maximum.
Under the cover, you’ll find Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 626 Mobile Platform. This one is backed by Adreno 506 GPU. This version of the device is a 3GB model.
Moto Z2 Play comes with 32 or 64GB of onboard storage RAM. The expandable storage through microSD card is up to an additional of 256GB. There’s no such like IP certification for resistance to the elements. Instead, Motorola includes a nano-coating which is effectively water repellent. That nano-coating also provides some form of splash protection.
“With a single speaker embedded in the earpiece, the audio experience isn’t great”.
Though the speaker is front facing, it is not very loud and gives lopsided listening experience. Alternatively, Moto Mod for the speaker may rid this problem. In fact, for that, Moto Z2 Play has JBL Sound Boost Moto Mod. Originally the phone does not include a headphone jack and the battery is reduced to 3000mAh.
The Oval-shaped fingerprint sensor works great while unlocking the phone. The sensor is speedy and reliable. To move around user interface instead of on-screen navigation keys, one can use gestures on scanners.
Another improvement which Motorola made is with 12MP autofocus back-camera having a wider f/1.7 aperture. The 5 MP selfies-shooter with f/2.2 aperture and front-facing LED flash does a decent job.
“Both the cameras are slower to capture in low light conditions. There in, images also lack accurate color reproduction and overall perfect sharpness.”
The Moto Z2 Play is presently a Verizon exclusive. Otherwise, after the summer it will prize up to $500 which is $50 higher than Moto Z Play. At $500, I will suggest go and get One Plus 5 because it is more than what you may get from Moto Z2 Play.
“There is a pending factor of Moto Mod. Because if you don’t need Moto Mod then take your decision wisely before you buy it.”
In the end, to sum up, everything, I may say that Moto Z2 Play is a competitor but not a bad smartphone. However, passing the shortcoming, Moto Z2 Play can make you think twice before investing for this.
